Included are correspondence, reports, and related papers of the North Carolina Geological Survey; of its successor, the Geological and Economic Survey; and of the State Geologist and State Mineralogist. During most of the period covered by these papers the agencies were headed by Joseph Austin Holmes, who served 1891-1904, and Joseph Hyde Pratt, who served 1906-1923. Also included are papers of Holmes and Pratt as industrial consultants, as faculty members at the University of North Carolina, and as participants in organizations, conferences, and movements in the field of conservation and the development of natural resources.
